Taking
over headlines everywhere, worldwide, is the massive number Syrian refugees
seeking shelter in other countries because ISIS and government attacks. These
issues in Syria have been going on for years, but their civil war is continuing
to get worse. However, it is just now getting a vast amount of attention
especially after images of children washing up on shore have surfaced online.
Many people native to that area are fearing for their lives in such a way that
they are picking up their lives, evacuating their homes and starting over in
new countries in hope for a safer and better life. These other countries are
welcoming in these refugees with open arms, gathering at bus and train stations
to give them money, food, water and just to let them know they are welcome and
not alone. It is actually quite a beautiful thing and restores faith in
humanity seeing that these countries and people can just welcome these strangers
into their homes without a second thought. Germany will take in around 800,000
refugees along with Jordan Turkey and others willing to take in hundreds of
thousands. The U.S has accepted 1,500 refugees so far.

refugees compared to the other countries taking in hundreds of thousands of
people from Syria…that number is extremely underwhelming and explains why so
many people are speaking out about why the U.S isn’t doing more and how our
country needs to play a more active role in helping out these refugees.
Being
the curious person I am, I always like to get the other side of every story
before taking on any conclusions or siding with any kind of opinion. With that
said, I did the research to find out why the United States hasn’t taken in
anymore refugees. The main reason: Opening our doors to refugees could lead to
the strong possibility of ISIS extremists and other terrorists being able to
easily get access to this country. The U.S. being the strong, successful
country it is, there are constant terroristic threats made especially from ISIS
who has killed American’s overseas already and have been recruiting Americans
(along with other nationalities as well) to engage is these dangerous and
terroristic acts. There have been massacres in villages, many women and
children raped and this same group has threaten the U.S. However, the U.S has
not just done nothing; there has been millions and millions donated to further
help these Syrians.
With
a situation like this, there pros and cons are serious and lives are at stake. Bloggers,
what do you think? Should we help these refugees by taking them under our wing
or play it safe and not risk the possibility of welcoming terrorists on our
land?

I myself am not one who is strongly opinionated on either side of the fence, however I do believe that the ethical thing to do is help people whenever and however we can help them. It is also counterproductive of me to think that way because I also understand the significance of keeping people out of the country for security reasons. No, it isn't fair and yes it is harsh and difficult to accept for those of us who have the drive to help and spread love and compassion, though in the long run it may be for the best without us even knowing so.
ReplyDeleteI think that the reason why the U.S. tends to keep a low-key role and sort of take minimal action in these situations is definitely because of the security threat, because right now (because of ISIS and others) it is far too risky to take the chance of allowing the "what if's" inside.
